Logitech MX Master 4 buying guide: will you use the extra controls?

The Logitech MX Master 4 is easiest to justify when its extra controls fit work you repeat every day. Before paying for a premium mouse, identify the actions you would actually assign to it and check that you can use the required software on your computer.

The new features may be interesting, but their value depends on your workflow. This buying guide uses Logitech's documentation; we have not tested the mouse or measured time savings.

What are Actions Ring and haptic feedback for?

Logitech describes Actions Ring as a way to bring shortcuts and tools to the cursor. The MX Master 4 also provides haptic feedback for supported actions, with customisation through Logi Options+. Its UK product page identifies Windows and macOS support for that software and describes the required app integration.

Think of these as controls to configure, not automatic improvements to every application. Before buying, write down three repeated tasks. Examples might include opening a tool you use frequently, changing an editing command or invoking an existing keyboard shortcut.

Then ask whether putting each action on the mouse would be easier than your current method. If your existing shortcuts already feel natural, the benefit may be modest. If you repeatedly leave the canvas or document to find a command, the feature is more relevant to investigate.

Can you use the software on your work computer?

Check installation permissions and the applications you rely on. On an employer-managed laptop, confirm whether Logi Options+ and any necessary plugins are available through the approved software process.

Distinguish basic pointer operation from the additional features you are paying for. A mouse that connects successfully has not necessarily established that every custom action or integration is available on that operating system.

If you cannot use the customisation software, evaluate the purchase on the physical controls, scrolling and fit you can use. Do not count unavailable integrations as part of its value.

Treat the time-saving claim as a specific study result

Logitech promotes an up-to-33% time saving, based on a 2025 study involving 37 existing MX Master users and eight desktop actions. Its footnote says results vary with the assigned shortcuts. Those conditions appear on the manufacturer's MX Master 4 page.

That does not establish a one-third reduction in your working day. A useful personal trial would compare a few tasks you actually perform, after allowing time to learn the controls. Judge whether the new arrangement is dependable as well as quick.

Keep early assignments simple and reversible. A shortcut you can remember is more useful than filling every available control with a command you rarely need.

Fit and scrolling still deserve attention

Try the mouse shape if possible, including the reach to the thumb controls. Use it beside the keyboard you normally work with. Check whether you can reach the buttons without changing your grip in a way you dislike.

Long documents, spreadsheets and editing timelines make different demands. Explore how you prefer to scroll through your own applications rather than choosing on the maximum DPI figure alone. High sensor resolution does not tell you which shape you will prefer.

Our ergonomic mouse guide provides a broader comparison of form factors. It is worth considering other shapes if the physical fit is the unresolved part of your current setup.

Keep the different editions separate

Confirm whether an offer is the standard MX Master 4, the Mac edition or a business package. Check the supplied receiver, connection requirements and accessories for that selected version. Do not borrow a box-content list from a different edition.

Buying reason Evidence that makes it worthwhile
Faster access to commands Specific supported actions you expect to use repeatedly.
Better desk fit A comfortable trial beside your normal keyboard.
Multi-computer work Confirmed compatibility for each computer and connection.
Replacing a worn mouse A complete offer that compares well with simpler alternatives.

Our wireless keyboard and mouse guide can help you plan the pair as a desk arrangement, particularly if a wide keyboard affects where the mouse sits.

Should you upgrade?

Shortlist the MX Master 4 if the shape suits you and the extra controls solve identifiable tasks on supported software. Keep your current mouse if it already fits well and the new functions would mostly go unused.

Check the MX Master 4 Graphite mouse listing on Amazon UK. The product page showed the Universal edition in Graphite when checked. Confirm the selected edition, seller and accessories, and compare the complete offer with Logitech's UK store.
