Elgato Wave Neo for meetings: plan its position before buying

The Elgato Wave Neo is a sensible microphone to investigate if you want a dedicated USB mic for a fixed meeting desk. Before buying, establish where it will stand: the manufacturer's recommended speaking distance is much closer than the far side of a monitor or laptop.

This guide uses Elgato's specifications and setup instructions. We have not recorded with the Wave Neo, so we do not claim a measured improvement over your existing microphone.

Can you put it close enough?

Elgato instructs users to speak into the side of the Wave Neo from approximately 8–12cm away. It is a side-address microphone, so pointing its top at your mouth is not the intended setup. See the official Wave Neo setup guide.

Use that distance to plan the desk before choosing accessories. Sit in your normal meeting position and identify a place where the mic could stay close without obscuring the screen or occupying the space needed by your hands.

If that position means leaning forward throughout a call, change the arrangement. An included desk stand is convenient only when it puts the microphone somewhere useful for you. A boom arm might be appropriate, but it adds cost and needs a suitable mounting point.

What is included in the basic setup?

Elgato lists the microphone with a desktop stand, riser and pop filter, plus a USB-C-to-A cable. The mic has a USB-C connection and a 3.5mm headphone output. Its UK product specification identifies it as a cardioid condenser microphone and lists compatible mounting threads.

Check the selected retailer's package contents rather than assuming that every offer includes the same extras. A microphone-and-webcam bundle is a different purchase from the microphone alone.

For a laptop with only USB-C ports, account for the computer end of the included cable. Use an appropriate data-capable connection. If a dock supplies the port, keep the mic on a stable connection you can identify easily in the operating system and calling app.

Do not expect directionality to silence the room

A cardioid specification describes a pickup pattern; it does not promise the removal of typing, traffic or another person speaking nearby. The result also depends on placement, input level, the room and any processing in your software.

Once connected, make a short recording in your usual working position. Include normal speech, a pause, some typing and a brief turn towards your second screen if that is how you work. Listen back before an important call and change one factor at a time.

If the microphone sounds distant, check placement before reaching for heavy processing. Our desk microphones for meetings guide puts standalone mics in the context of other meeting arrangements.

Decide how you will hear the call

The Wave Neo's headphone connection is useful to consider when planning monitoring and call audio. Check Elgato's instructions for the available monitoring controls, then select the intended input and output devices in your meeting application.

Using headphones also keeps meeting playback out of the room. If you prefer speakers, test the actual call arrangement rather than assuming that the microphone, speaker position and app's echo handling will work well together.

A headset may be a simpler option if you frequently move your head or change desks. Compare that trade-off using our home-office headset guide. The dedicated microphone is most appealing when its fixed position fits your routine.

Keep the first software setup simple

Begin with the microphone selected directly as the app's input. Confirm that speech reaches the call and learn how the hardware mute control behaves. Check the current operating-system requirements before installing optional Elgato software.

Add mixing or effects only if they solve a need you can identify. Routing through several virtual devices can create more settings to check when changing between meeting apps. Write down the input you intend each application to use so reconnecting the mic does not become guesswork.

Your routine What to resolve first
Seated calls at one desk A close, repeatable microphone position.
Frequent typing during calls A real recording with your keyboard and input settings.
Moving between rooms Whether carrying a standalone mic is worthwhile.
Standing and sitting Whether the mic moves with you and its cable has enough slack.

Is it the right purchase for your desk?

Shortlist the Wave Neo if you want a dedicated USB microphone and can give it a suitable position near your mouth. Reconsider the arrangement if the mic would have to sit beyond the keyboard or if a headset better matches how you move during calls.
