The UGREEN Maxidok 17-in-1 raises a useful desk question: would you rather combine docking and storage expansion in one device, or keep your storage separate? The answer depends on where you work and how often you move files or equipment away from the desk.
Integrated storage is appealing for a permanent workstation. A separate drive can be easier to carry, replace or connect elsewhere. This guide considers those trade-offs using manufacturer information; we have not tested the dock, SSD performance or cooling.

What distinguishes the 17-in-1 model?
UGREEN's manufacturer page describes a Thunderbolt 5 dock with an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 ×4 expansion slot supporting up to 8TB, alongside up to 140W host charging and 2.5GbE networking. The page distinguishes it from the smaller 10-in-1 Maxidok, which does not list that SSD slot. See the UGREEN Maxidok manufacturer specification.
That source is UGREEN's US page. Use it for the stated hardware features, and confirm the exact UK product, supplied accessories and local sale terms separately. Do not transfer US pricing or warranty wording to a UK offer.
Capacity support is not included storage
A phrase such as “up to 8TB” describes a supported expansion capacity; it does not establish that a drive is supplied. Check the specific package contents before comparing prices. Budget for a compatible SSD unless the chosen listing explicitly includes one.
Confirm the accepted drive format, interface, size and installation requirements in the current manual. Do not assume every M.2 drive fits because the connector looks familiar. Follow the documented installation procedure, including any thermal components specified for the enclosure.
Where do your files need to travel?
If your working files mainly stay at one desk, an integrated drive may reduce loose boxes and cable connections. You can arrange the laptop around one permanent station and leave the storage in place when you take the laptop out.
If you frequently carry the same project to another workstation, a separate external drive may be more convenient. Consider the whole journey: leaving home, working elsewhere and returning. Consolidation is valuable only if it matches that routine.
| Working pattern | Arrangement to consider |
|---|---|
| Project storage stays at a permanent desk | Dock-integrated expansion may simplify the installation. |
| Files regularly travel between locations | A separate portable drive may be easier to move. |
| You already own suitable external storage | Keep it unless integration solves a worthwhile problem. |
| Dock and storage are upgraded on different schedules | Separate devices may give more flexibility. |
Think through disconnection and backup
A drive inside a dock is still a drive connected to the computer. Finish transfers and use the operating system's normal safe-removal process before disconnecting where required. Do not treat unplugging the laptop as a harmless action while files are still being written.
Also decide where the backup lives. Adding capacity does not create an independent backup of the files stored there. If the dock is unavailable for service, consider how you would continue working and access the data you need. This is an ordinary equipment-planning question, especially when several functions share one box.
Verify the docking requirements too
The storage slot should not distract from host compatibility. Check the full laptop model, supported port and operating system against the current manufacturer guidance. Map each monitor connection, required display mode and peripheral before ordering.
Do not equate a connection's headline bandwidth with the speed of an installed SSD in your workload. The host, drive and workload all matter. We have no measured sustained-transfer figures for this dock and make no performance guarantee.
Our home-office monitor guide can help establish the display arrangement, while our desk cable-management guide covers the physical installation.
Buying recommendation
Consider the 17-in-1 Maxidok when you need a compatible permanent docking setup and have a clear reason to keep expandable storage inside it. Compare a dock plus a separate enclosure when portability, independent replacement or existing equipment matters more. Include the SSD and all necessary accessories in both totals.

Is an integrated SSD automatically faster than an external one?
No. Compare the actual drive, enclosure interface, host connection and workload. Physical integration alone is not a performance measurement or a reason to replace a drive that already meets your needs.
