Boulies Master vs Master Max: which size belongs at your desk?

Choose between the Boulies Master and Master Max by fit, not by treating “Max” as an automatic upgrade. A larger chair can be the better choice for one person and leave another reaching awkwardly for the desk or sitting too far forward.

The useful comparison starts with seat dimensions and working position. We have not tested either chair, so this guide uses the manufacturer's stated distinctions and practical fit checks rather than claimed comfort scores.

What changes between the two sizes?

Boulies says the Master and Master Max share features but differ in size. Its buying guide recommends Master for users 155–180cm tall and under 110kg, and Master Max for 180–200cm and under 135kg. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee of individual fit or a substitute for the model's full specification. See the Boulies Master and Master Max size guidance.

Use those ranges to begin the comparison, then examine the dimensions. If you are near a boundary, do not select by the final centimetre of your height alone. Torso and leg proportions, preferred sitting position and the desk arrangement also matter.

Compare with a seat you can measure

Find a chair you know well. Measure its usable seat width and depth and note where its backrest and arms sit relative to you. Write down whether you would want any of those dimensions larger or smaller.

Now compare the separate technical drawings for Master and Master Max on Boulies' product page. Look at the chair you would receive, including the selected version, rather than assuming every historical review describes the same specification.

What you notice in your current chair What to investigate
The seat feels too deep Compare usable depth and whether you can use the backrest comfortably.
The arms feel too far apart Check their adjustment and usable spacing, not just overall chair width.
The chair will not move close enough to the desk Measure arm and under-desk clearance.
More than one person uses the chair Compare the adjustment needs of both users before choosing the larger size.

Lumbar adjustment should be easy to use

Boulies describes integrated lumbar support with height and depth adjustment. That gives you settings to evaluate; it does not establish that the support shape will suit everyone. Check the manufacturer's feature description for the current configuration.

If you can try the chair, change one setting at a time and use it at a desk. Sitting back briefly in a showroom is different from reaching the keyboard and mouse in your normal working position. Check whether the controls remain accessible when you are seated.

Our office-chair buying guide covers the wider fit assessment. Avoid expecting a chair change to compensate for a desktop or keyboard position that does not suit you.

Choose upholstery for your routine

Consider how you use the room and how you prefer to maintain furniture. Request material samples if available, and read the care instructions for the exact upholstery selected. Photographs can help with colour choice, but they cannot establish how a surface will feel during a working day.

Do not treat terms such as water-repellent as permission to ignore spills or use any cleaning product. Follow the specific care guidance and compare the ongoing maintenance you are willing to do. Choose the material after establishing the right size, rather than accepting the wrong fit to obtain a preferred colour.

Include delivery, assembly and returns

Measure the route to the room and identify where assembly will happen. Check package contents and whether any optional services are included in the selected offer. If you need assistance, our office-chair assembly guide can help you consider that separately.

Read the seller's current return procedure, especially for an assembled chair. Keep packaging while assessing fit. An online purchase is easier to evaluate when you understand in advance how an unsuitable chair would be returned.

Which would we shortlist?

Start with Master when its actual dimensions suit your seated working position. Consider Master Max when its larger dimensions are a better match, supported by the separate technical drawing and the manufacturer's guidance. If neither size fits well, choose a different chair rather than assuming the more expensive or larger option must be preferable.

Use Boulies' UK product page to compare the current sizes and configurations. We have not verified an Amazon UK offer for these exact chairs, so this guide does not attach a speculative Amazon product listing.
