Illustrative desk arrangement; the equipment shown is generic and does not depict the TS5 Plus.
The CalDigit TS5 Plus deserves a place on your shortlist if you connect a compatible laptop to a demanding permanent desk setup, especially one with fast network storage. Before buying, identify the job you need it to improve. A premium dock can consolidate connections, but an expensive port does not automatically make everyday work faster.
Our buying recommendation is conditional: consider it when the rest of your equipment can use its capabilities. For email, browser work and an ordinary monitor, start by pricing a dock that meets those specific requirements. Spend the difference where you will notice it.
This is a guide based on published manufacturer information and practical purchasing analysis. We have not tested the TS5 Plus, measured its transfer speeds or assessed its long-term reliability.

What makes the TS5 Plus worth considering?
CalDigit lists Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, 20 ports, 10GbE networking and up to 140W of host charging. It also distinguishes 80Gb/s bidirectional bandwidth from a display-focused boost of up to 120Gb/s. Those figures describe connection capabilities; they are not a promise that your files will copy at those rates. See the official TS5 Plus specifications.
The useful question is how many separate problems that combination solves. If you currently reconnect a charger, network adaptor, monitor and several peripherals every morning, consolidation has an everyday benefit. If your current dock already handles everything, write down the limitation you are paying to remove before shopping.
Will 10GbE help your network storage workflow?
Imagine you keep a project archive on a NAS, a storage device reached over your home network. You repeatedly move large video folders between it and your laptop. A faster network connection may be valuable in that situation, but only when the rest of the path can support it.
Check the storage device's network interface, any switch between it and the laptop, the cabling, and the storage itself. A slow link elsewhere can still limit the transfer. Upgrading the laptop's end of the connection alone does not remove every bottleneck.
There is also a difference between capacity and need. Someone moving large projects several times a day has a stronger reason to investigate faster networking than someone opening a handful of documents. Estimate how much time you currently spend waiting, then compare that with the full upgrade cost, including any other equipment required.
| Your current situation | Sensible buying decision |
|---|---|
| Large transfers to suitably equipped network storage are a regular part of work | Investigate the TS5 Plus alongside the rest of the network path. |
| The storage device or an intervening switch is the limiting link | Price the complete upgrade before choosing a dock. |
| Work mainly involves cloud documents and video calls | Prioritise reliable connections and the ports you actually use. |
| Your current setup already performs well | Keep it until you can identify a worthwhile improvement. |
Check your exact laptop before ordering
The shape of a USB-C socket is not enough to establish compatibility. Find your laptop's full model and its port specification in the manufacturer's documentation. If you use a work-issued machine, check whether you can install required drivers before buying accessories yourself.
CalDigit excludes ordinary 5/10Gb/s USB-C hosts and Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs from TS5 Plus compatibility. Its supported Macs require macOS 15 or later. Ethernet needs Thunderbolt or a USB4 host with PCIe support, and Windows users need the Ethernet driver. Confirm these points against CalDigit's current host compatibility information for your machine.
If a future laptop purchase is the main reason for upgrading, wait until you have selected that laptop. Buying the dock first can leave you making the larger purchase around an accessory, rather than around your actual work.
Plan the monitor connections separately
Write down each monitor's model, resolution, desired refresh rate and available inputs. Then check the exact laptop-and-dock combination. A connector count alone does not tell you how many independent desktops your computer can drive.
CalDigit makes display support dependent on the host and operating system. Its ordinary USB-A and USB-C data ports are not display outputs; use the documented display-capable connections. Check the manufacturer's display compatibility table before buying adapters.
Include any necessary cables and adapters in the price comparison. A supposedly better-value option can become expensive if it requires several extras. If you are still deciding on the screen itself, start with our guide to choosing a monitor for a home office.
Leave room for the whole installation
A dock does not make the connected equipment disappear. Before ordering, choose a reachable position for the laptop cable and leave space for cable plugs, the power supply and ventilation. Avoid making frequently used connections difficult to reach just to hide the box.
On a standing desk, plan the route from the moving desktop to the wall socket. Leave enough slack for the full height range without letting loops catch on furniture. Test the movement slowly after installation. Our desk cable-management guide covers the broader arrangement.
What should you compare before buying?
Compare complete setups with the same requirements: your laptop, your screens, your peripherals and your charging needs. Include the cost of cables and any separate network adaptor. Check the seller, exact model, condition and return terms, especially when comparing marketplace listings.
The TS5 Plus and similarly named CalDigit docks are different products. Do not assume a listing for another model offers the same networking or compatibility. The Amazon link below was checked against the TS5 Plus product page. Confirm the selected model, seller, package contents and current terms before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
Will a 10GbE dock make ordinary broadband faster?
It cannot increase the speed supplied by your internet connection. Assess internet access and transfers within your own network separately. Faster local networking is only useful when there is a local workload and compatible equipment to benefit from it.
Is it worth replacing a working dock?
Only if the replacement solves a limitation you care about. List what currently goes wrong or slows you down, then check that the new setup addresses it. Extra unused sockets alone are a weak reason to replace reliable equipment.
Should I buy it before choosing my next laptop?
Choose the laptop and intended display arrangement first. That gives you concrete compatibility requirements and a meaningful basis for comparing docks. An uncertain future upgrade is harder to justify than a clearly defined current need.
